Spring is just around the corner. The temperature has been getting into the lower 40s with the 50s predicted by next week. The spring-like feel in the air reminds me that I never sat down in my big chair on a cold-snowy January night to begin planning this year's garden, as I thought I'd do. Some of the reason was my constant battle with sloth (a post for another time). It's also true that when you are in a very wintery frame of heart, thoughts of spring can hurt. Plus we all know how I need a deadline. As I watch the snow melting I can feel that deadline approaching. Seeds need to be ordered so that they can be received and started in early to mid-April. So I've begun making these sorts of lists:
spinach
peas
lettuce
kidney beans
kentucky wonder
basil
brandywine (2)
roma
cilantro
cherry
muskmelon
butternut squash (saved seed)
I'm excited to see the vibernum we planted last fall (above) leaf out and flower. They tell me the scent is heavenly. I'm starting to feel that motherly anticipation for the fruits of the earth and the incredible surprise and joy they always bring.
Somewhere underneath this pile of snow and leaves are two furrows I put in the soil last fall, ready to receive the earliest crops of spinach and peas. Even on that cold October day I knew that spring would come. As soon as the sun melts the last of the snow, the garden will be ready to receive new life. And my heart will be ready for spring.
We can see it just around the corner.
