Rev. Dr. King

Today is the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be celebrated the day before the Inauguration of our country's first African-American President. I have been doing a little research on Rev. Dr. King today (I was looking for his call story to use in my sermon on Sunday). Here are a few resources that you might find interesting:

The King Institute at Stanford

The Preacher King by Richard Lischer focuses on King's preaching. (An electronic copy can be found at google books)

And, of course, the full "I Have a Dream" speech from the March on Washington

We move into an historic week and prepare to remember and celebrate the accomplishments of people like King and other brave prophets who have fought the forces of oppression. But let us not for a moment sit back with smug satisfaction and believe that King's dream has finally been realized in America. If you doubt this, come to Chicago and travel from the North Side to the South Side. You will not need to look far or hard to see that we should not yet be satisfied. There are still dreams waiting to be fulfilled.

So true, so true. While an historic achievement has come about- much work still remains. I was reading an article in The Weekly Standard from Dec. 29 about Detroit today- and feeling the same thing. We must applaud and encourage the progress while never allowing ourselves to feel that we've already arrived.
