First Fruits

I harvested the first real crop today; baby greens from the "cold weather bed." I'd hoped to be eating peas and growing carrots by now, but it seems I've gotten to be a lazy gardener (the carrots never came up and I keep forgetting to turn on the light for my tomato seedlings in the basement). Nonetheless, these little lettuce guys brought me great joy (and made a delicious salad). I remind myself that in the past two years nothing even went into the ground until the end of May -- so garden goodness on May 4 is a great gift! And there is an even greater gift... When I went out to weed and tidy up the beds this afternoon I found an assortment of "volunteers" growing -- plants that either dropped seeds in the ground last year or made it back into the garden through the compost. I have volunteer dill, cilantro, and -- would you believe it -- tomatoes. It seems that no matter how little I help it, the garden will grow. That is one reason the garden is a place of grace.

Recently I received copies of photos of the garden from the end of last season. It's amazing to think that these little lettuce guys are only the beginning. Such joy over a bowl full of leaves. And there is so much life is still to come! Grace beyond grace. Let the season begin!
