Construction

A while back, as I was looking through some new gardening blogs, I found this design for a squash trellis. I'm always looking for a way to make the garden a little less of a jungle (right now cutting my grass would go a long way toward that end -- if only it would stop raining!). I was a little intimidated; after all, I was always in charge of "software" in the garden, while J was in charge of "hardware." But, I wrote down the instructions (which I kept calling a "pattern") and headed to Menards.

I love that these boards all fit in my Honda Civic with no trouble! The construction went really easily. The biggest problems were having to go out and get different screws (the ones I had were vulnerable to rusting) and then needing to move everything quickly into the garage while the 70 mile per hour winds and thunderstorm passed through. Once the skies were clear I went back out to finish and here is the result:

The ground was too squishy for me to get up on my step stool and really tie the top together tightly (there would be some advantages to being a bit taller!). I also put some stakes into the ground and tied the legs to them. More thunderstorms are coming through, so I guess we'll find out just how sturdy this thing is by tomorrow! Hopefully the squash and muskmelon will enjoy their new home; and stay out of the other beds this year.
